Chandeliers are thought of as a classic or period-style light only reserved for homes with ornate decór and high ceilings– that couldn’t be further from the truth. At Tiffany Lighting Direct, we have vast collection of traditional and contemporary chandeliers fit nearly all homes and aesthetics.

Traditional Chandeliers

At Tiffany Lighting Direct we have a vast range of classic chandeliers in a variety of finishes to suit your style. Our brass and gold chandeliers are fabulous examples of the art deco chandeliers that are still popular as today as they were in the 1920s.

A traditional chandelier is a ceiling hanging light typically with between three and 21 arms that hold a light source. The more extravagant chandeliers featured glass or crystal prisms to cast beautiful light refractions around the room and were used to flaunt the owner’s class and status.

Our period style crystal chandeliers add grace and a stunning ambient light to a dining room or living space.

Modern Chandeliers

Nowadays, chandeliers come in a variety of shapes and sizes to match contemporary design trends. To meet the demand of adding a chandelier to newer homes where the ceilings are lower, many modern chandeliers have been designed to be flush or fit closer to the ceiling.

At Tiffany Lighting Direct we know that not everyone wants an antique replica, which is why have a collection of modern chandeliers to offer a more minimalist hanging light. Our more modern styles come in polished chrome finish, bronze, and gold.

Buying Guide For Chandeliers

Before you go ahead and start shopping for a chandelier there are several things you should consider: the size of the chandelier in relation to your room, and the drop of the chandelier.

Getting the Sizing Right

Firstly you should measure the height of your ceiling, to understand whether a hanging light will encroach into the room. The last thing you want is for a large ceiling to dominate the space.

Ceilings Under 8ft

A low ceiling is unlikely to be able to accommodate most chandeliers, unless it is a very flush or semi-flush light . A light that hangs lower than 1 foot from the ceiling is likely to get in the way of family members and visitors over 6ft.

Ceilings Between 8ft - 10ft

This a typical ceiling height for homes in the UK, and is high enough to hang a variety of pendant lights or lanterns a suspension or chain. In many cases, chandelier chains can be shortened if the drop is too low.

The key is too not overwhelm the space with a ceiling light that has too many many tiers or arms! The exception is if you have a chandelier to hang over something, like a dining room table. If your chandelier is above a table, try to leave a gap of at least 2ft.

Ceilings Higher Than 10ft

If your ceiling is higher than 10ft, you’re likely able to accommodate any chandelier! For larger rooms with high ceilings, you may consider a more expansive chandelier with a greater number of arms to fill the space. Unless the arms are wide, a 3 or 5 light chandelier may not be big enough for the space.

Best Bulbs For a Chandelier

The best lightbulbs for interior lighting are LEDs, as opposed to halogen or older incandescent bulbs. LEDs are brighter, more energy-efficient, and can last up to twenty times longer than an incandescent lightbulb.

Oval or candle-shaped LED bulbs help to maintain the traditional aesthetic of a chandelier as they imitate the appearance of a candle, which would’ve been used on a chandelier in the past.

Cleaning Your Chandelier

Chandeliers are intricate and are prone to collecting dust, so its advisable to give them a clean to keep them gleaming. Here’s our expert advise of how to properly take care of your chandelier:

1. Switch off the power to the light at the fuse board
2. Unscrew each bulb and carefully give them a clean with a cloth
3. Using a feather duster, gently dab at the areas that have built up dust and cobwebs

Do not use a liquid glass cleaner or an aerosol spray as this could damage the electrics and the fittings.
