The History of Bankers Lamps
The original Bankers Lamp was created and patented in May 1909 by Harrison D. McFaddin. Although the lamps were patented in the US, the lights were actually produced in Moravia, which is now part of the Czech Republic. The first and most well-known design of Bankers lamp is a brass base with a curved green-coloured glass shade.
The emerald colour of the glass shade gave them the name Emeralite Lamps, and the genuine antiques are coveted by collectors. H.G. McFaddin & Co. produced Emeralite lamps until 1960 when the company was dissolved, leading to many manufacturers selling replicas.
The Emeralite lights were favoured by businesses and banks, as green was a colour that was thought to promote concentration, which is what led to them now being known as Bankers Lamps. Many organisations could also have their logo embedded in the glass shade adding to their popularity.
