Buying Guide For Chandeliers

Before you go ahead and start shopping for a chandelier there are several things you should consider: the size of the chandelier in relation to your room, and the drop of the chandelier. 

Getting the Sizing Right

Firstly you should measure the height of your ceiling, to understand whether a hanging light will encroach into the room. The last thing you want is for a large ceiling to dominate the space.

Ceilings Under 8ft

A low ceiling is unlikely to be able to accommodate most chandeliers, unless it is a very flush or semi-flush light. A light that hangs lower than 1 foot from the ceiling is likely to get in the way of family members and visitors over 6ft. 

Ceilings Between 8ft - 10ft

This a typical ceiling height for homes in the UK, and is high enough to hang a variety of pendant lights or lanterns a suspension or chain. In many cases, chandelier chains can be shortened if the drop is too low.

The key is too not overwhelm the space with a ceiling light that has too many many tiers or arms! The exception is if you have a chandelier to hang over something, like a dining room table. If your chandelier is above a table, try to leave a gap of at least 2ft.

Ceilings Higher Than 10ft

If your ceiling is higher than 10ft, you’re likely able to accommodate any chandelier! For larger rooms with high ceilings, you may consider a more expansive chandelier with a greater number of arms to fill the space. Unless the arms are wide, a 3 or 5 light chandelier may not be big enough for the space.

Room Style

• Traditional or Classic Design: Opt for chandeliers with crystal or glass accents to complement the room’s elegant decor.
• Modern or Contemporary Design: Select sleek, minimalist designs that align with the room’s modern aesthetics.

• Height Above Surface: When installing above a dining table, leave about 30-34 inches of space between the table and the bottom of the chandelier. For entryways or living rooms, ensure the bottom of the chandelier is a minimum of 7 feet above the floor.
• Chandelier Shape: Consider the shape relative to the room. Conventional round chandeliers suit round tables and square or rectangular rooms, while linear chandeliers are ideal for long, rectangular tables and spaces.

1. Switch off the power to the light at the fuse board
2. Unscrew each bulb and carefully give them a clean with a cloth
3. Using a feather duster, gently dab at the areas that have built up dust and cobwebs

Do not use a liquid glass cleaner or an aerosol spray as this could damage the electrics and the fittings.
